4. Republic Day of Armenia
|
|
 |
| On May 28, we honour the Republic Day of Armenia and the founding of the First Republic in 1918.
Born from sacrifice, resilience and the will to survive, the First Republic restored Armenian statehood after centuries without independence.
Today, its legacy reminds us of our duty to defend Armenia’s sovereignty and stand united as a nation and diaspora.

5. News articles and recent developments
|
|
|
|
| A new report by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) found that the trials of Artsakh leaders in Baku “fell short of the guarantees of fairness and equality of arms required under international human rights law”.
The report, titled “Justice Under Pressure: Independence of Lawyers and the Right to a Fair Trial in Azerbaijan”, states that defendants were tried before a military court, denied effective access to counsel of their choosing, faced inadequate interpretation, and were provided case materials in a language they did not understand. The ICJ also noted that hearings were held largely behind closed doors, with international observers, foreign media and family members denied access.
Regarding Ruben Vardanyan, the report raised concerns over charges linked to 1988, noting that he “held no political position at the time the charges relate to”. |

Among the missing are Albert Avetisyan and Marat Khachatryan, who disappeared after intense fighting near the 308th military position close to Sznakh. Other cases include elderly civilians Robert Musayelyan, 83, and Shura Manasyan, 86, who disappeared while attempting to leave their village.

 |
| On May 9, we remember the liberation of Shushi in 1992, a defining moment in the struggle for Artsakh’s freedom and self-determination. “Wedding in the Mountains” was more than a military operation. It became a symbol of resilience, sacrifice and the determination of a people to live freely on their ancestral land. Shushi is not forgotten, nor surrendered to history. Its churches, streets and spirit remain deeply rooted in the Armenian national consciousness.
The people of Artsakh, Nagorno-Karabakh, may have been forcibly displaced, but their right to return and to live in dignity remains unchanged.
We will return. |

Why Donate?
The Armenian National Committee of the United Kingdom (ANC-UK) is the largest and most influential British-Armenian political grassroots organisation.
Working in coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout Britain and affiliated organisations around the world, ANC-UK actively advances the concerns of the British-Armenian community on a broad range of issues.
The work achieved by ANC-UK is currently on a volunteer basis. However, we are hopeful that in the coming years through the financial support of our community, the ANC-UK chapter will have the necessary funds to open a full-time office employing an Executive Director and a part-time Administrative Assistant.
Setting up an ANC-UK office will allow for our organisation’s goals to be achieved as they have been throughout the diaspora in the United States of America, Canada, Australia and Europe.
As a grassroots organisation, we rely upon you, our community and friends for financial assistance to advance our cause. Your donations support our goal of having a full-time office, to advocate on issues important to all British-Armenians and the Armenian cause.
Thank you for your consideration of our request for your support.
