Dear Members of the Armenian community in the United Kingdom,
Thank you for your continued support of ANC UK in our efforts to influence and guide UK policy on the issue of Artsakh and welcome to those of you who have recently signed up to our newsletter.
ANC UK will host an event on 13 December 2020, at 6pm with Tim Loughton MP, Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Armenia. Tim will provide an update on the work of the APPG, share his views on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and provide a British perspective on the next steps for a meaningful resolution. At his most recent appearance in Parliament, Tim highlighted the need for the British Government to take a stance on the current situation and ensure a peaceful, permanent t resolution of the conflict.
Join us for a unique opportunity to hear from Tim and engage in a lively discussion.

Our campaign: Act to Help POWs

Last week ANC UK launch a campaign to stop the inhumane treatment of Armenian prisoners of war held captive by Azerbaijan, ensure their safe return and allow Artsakh and Armenia to collect their dead. This still remains a key issue and there is still time to raise this with your MP, by writing to them today.

Our actions on your behalf

Over the last two weeks, we have continued to raise your concerns with the government and raise awareness of the situation on the ground through media coverage and events. Here are the latest actions we have taken on your behalf:
1. With the leadership of Tim Loughton MP, Chairman of the APPG for Armenia, a debate was organised in Westminster Hall at the House of Commons on 9 December 2020. ANC UK provided a detailed briefing, several reports and a set of questions to be raised by the MPs at the debate.
Key issues raised at the debate included:
  • Azerbaijan’s war crimes
  • Use of cluster bombs and phosphorous chemicals
  • Use of mercenaries by Azerbaijan
  • The involvement of Turkey and the role of Russia
  • Recognition of Artsakh
  • Recognition of the Armenian Genocide
You can watch the full video on the Parliament TV website and you can read the transcript of the debate on Hansard.
2. Baroness Cox’s took part in the House of Lord’s debate on genocide. You can watch her intervention at 22:33:13 Baroness Cox (Crossbench). You can also download and read Baroness Cox’s most recent report ‘Grief and courage’ on her website.
3. ANC UK held a more detailed meeting with the HALO Trust last week. During the meeting, the HALO trust presented its report on Artsakh and the impact of cluster bombs, and landmines. These pose a significant danger to children and to the general population of Artsakh. HALO Trust is currently looking for funding as its main funding from USAID stopped last year. We encourage the community to support their fundraising efforts by considering them in your donation list this Christmas. You can donate on their website.
4. We have already been engaging with key humanitarian, human rights and environmental organisations to raise awareness about the issues in Artsakh and encourage them to take a stance. We will continue engaging with these organisations over the coming weeks.

Next steps

ANC UK remains focused on bringing the ongoing concerns about Armenian prisoners of wars and captive civilians to the attention of our government.
We need to continue compelling local MPs to demand that our government takes action and puts pressure on the Azerbaijani authorities to stop the kidnappings of Armenians and release the large number of Armenian captives.
We will continue taking action on your behalf.

How you can help:

Participate in our campaign by writing to your MP to raise awareness about what is happening to POWs. ANC has templates on our website. It’s just a click of a button.
